Our Process

How It Works

My process begins with a thorough garage door preparation, including removing weather stripping, masking trims, and protecting surfaces with dropsheets. After applying at least two coats of Speed Enamel, I finish by reassembling and performing any final touch-ups, leaving your garage door looking flawless.

  • Garage Prepartion

All weather stripping is removed from the trims.

Masking paper and tape is applied around the trims, and door windows if neeeded. Weather seal at the bottom is taped up.

Dropsheet covers the concrete to protect it.

  • Spray Application

Minimum 2 coats of Speed Enamel in chosen color are sprayed onto the garage door.

  • Finishing

All masking paper and tape is removed. Dropsheet packed up.

    Weather stripping put back.

    Final touchups performed if needed.

Asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The paint I use is from Cloverdale. It is called Speed Enamel and it is a quick-drying, rust resistant, self-priming enamel for interior or exterior exposure. It is primarily designed for application on metal surfaces, like metal garage doors and it is made to be used through a spray gun. The paint is very strong. It is resilient to weather and fading and because it is an oil-based paint, it is not prone to flaking like you would get with any other type of paint (like water-based exterior paint).

The paint is mixed with industrial-strength xylene thinner. This thins the paint and allows it to come out of the gun very smoothly. This is how I am about to achieve a smooth finish on the entire door.

  • In most cases, homeowners want to reuse the same color that is already on their garage door. In such cases, there might be leftover paint from the first time it was applied to the garage. Or, you most likely have an exterior spec sheet that lists the colors on the exterior of the house (if not, you can contact your home builder and they will have it). If this is the case, then I just need the paint name and the color code which is usually on the top of the paint can. Cloverdale can then make the paint within the day.

If you don't have the color code at all, we have 2 options. Our first option is to do a color- match. This is when I take in a physical piece of the color (from the siding in most cases) and then Cloverdale can color match it. Our 2nd option is to use a paint color sampler and try to match it to the color you would want.

  • Take a look at some of the pictures of the garage doors I have done. The one thing you will notice is that the colors match with some parts of the exterior house. If they do not match anything, then the garage color is usually the complete opposite of the siding color (like a black garage door with white siding, etc)!

  • In almost all cases, only 2 coats are needed to achieve a perfect finish. This is especially true when the garage already has previous paint on it. I never put just 1 coat on the garage.

There are 3 types of bases that this paint is made: clear, white, and deep base. The type of base used is determined by Cloverdale when they make the paint and that allows them to make the color. In some cases when using clear-based paint, there is the possibility that I need to spray an undercoat before applying the actual color.

The undercoat is just another, usually very similar color that provides a good base for the clear base enamel to be sprayed on. In these cases, you might get 3 coats on your garage. Obviously, there is no additional charge if this is the case.

  • Since I use an-oil based enamel for metal, the paint does not have a hard time adhering to the surface of the garage door. As a result, the door does not have to be sand or wiped clean at all. Some people are sometimes surprised by this answer.

The fact is, if you actually introduce water to the garage (in an attempt to clean dirt off of it) right before painting, it creates tiny air bubbles which make it harder for the paint to adhere to the metal surface.

If your garage door is flaking badly (this is almost always the case of purely wooden garage doors, commonly found on older homes) then my services is not the right choice for you. If the surface is flaking very noticeably, our paint will cover and stop the flaking temporarily, but it will eventually become noticeable again.

Metal doors do not have this problem most of the time. If there is concern about the condition of the door, I always come to check out the door before purchasing the paint to see if my services will actually make a difference.

  • The speed enamel I use is corrosion and rust-resistant. However, if the metal has already started rusting and it is very noticeable, then that is an indication that there are cracks within the metal in that area. My paint will cover it but it can come back. Usually. metal garage doors don't have a rust issue so it's not an issue.

  • The preparation process is simple. I remove the weather stripping around the garage door and I put masking paper around the trim to prevent over-spray from getting on anything that it should not. I then lay a drop sheet down onto the pavement and I tape the bottom rubber seal to protect that as well. After that, the garage door is ready to be sprayed!

  • The paint dries almost instantly. Once I am finished with the 2nd coat, I give it 5 minutes so that I can make sure everything dries smoothly. After that, the garage door can be used right away. If it happens to rain after the garage door is freshly painted, no worries, the paint is already dry and will not come off.

  • I do not. My spray gun is fine-tuned for exterior metal garage doors. Wooden garage doors are often flaking before I am called which impacts how the garage door will look when I finish. I don't do doors such as front doors, and back doors, as the power of my gun will cause the paint to drip down the surface of the door.

  • I accept cash, e-transfer, or I can send an invoive through Squarespace and you can pay through that!
